WHO AM I?
Well, hello there. My name is Simran Tatuskar, and I want to be your next Student Union President. There is a lot to be said about experience (of which I have a LOT), but there is also a lot to be said about a person themselves. I am a 5'1 tiny hurricane of a person who is too uncoordinated for her own good, makes more puns than the average person, and cares unconditionally about many people and things. There is not a lot that I have not done in my time at Brandeis - switched majors, worked in a lab, pledged Greek life, gotten food poisoning from Sherman, stayed in the library until 2 AM and got kicked out, joined and attended over 40 different club meetings, etc. I have done a lot in this school, but most importantly I have done a lot for this school and care about what happens to this university and want to make changes to help improve university and student life.
WHAT HAVE I DONE?
wow so much experience
STUDENT UNION SECRETARY
Remember those emails you get once a week? Yeah, those are me. Countless hours went into creating a new and more readable format, modifying and writing new ones each week, reaching out to organizations and clubs on campus to learn about their events, and making sure the student body has a slightly more engaging way to know what's going on.
I am the only candidate with executive board experience, which also means if we had a zombie apocaplyse and both the president and vice president were attacked, I'd be your gal whether you wanted me to be or not. But in reality, this means I already know how e-board runs, have sat in on meetings, have been involved in conversations about what is going on in campus and know to continue those projects and initatives the way the people who founded them would like to.
Marie Kondo-ed the office - not only have I entirely revamped the student union office to be a clean, well-stocked, and functional office space but I have done work to promote open communication and collaboration among members of the student union within this space, be it judicial board, senate, or e-board to have a more collaborative and inclusive environment.
I have sat in on atleast every. single. senate. committee. meeting. I know what is going on in all branches of the Senate already, know what initiatives are at play and what they're trying to get done, and have been exposed and have experience to what the difference groups of students are trying to accomplish on campus.
I have ran one of the most highly attended Special elections meeting, having multiple candidates for nearly every spot, reformatting candidate bios, providing more engaging and unique election emails, and have experience serving as Chief of Elections and making sure no one does any shady stuff.
Office hours - I created organized binders for every single individual on the union to track their signed Code of Conduct and weekly office hours to hold people accountable for their contribution to the union.
HEALTH AND SAFETY COMMITTEE CO CHAIR
Free condoms in all freshmen dorm bathrooms! Be safe! Started and established the condom project, worked with both SSIS and the Health Center to order and distribute them, and yeah that was an experience.
Spearheaded the BCC outreach project and have helped schedule meetings with administrators there, and have collected student testimonies on experiences with the BCC to bring to their attention and help have an open line of communication between the student body and the counseling center.
Accessibility - Have met with the Dean of Arts and Sciences and other members of administration to discuss improving accessibility within the sciences and classes on campus, and attended and was a staunch advocate for the accessibility forum on campus.
Met with the BranVan coordinator to discuss better accessibility on campus, and discussions led to better trackers, an ongoing accessible campus van, better training strategies, and adding additional stops to make campus more accessible.
Have reached out to and met with students to discuss issues they have seen around campus, and brought certain ones to the attention of administration and other members of the Union.
Met with the Health Center to discuss their new online portal, current statistics of student health, and potential STD clinic as well as making their resources more accessible to the student body.
Have invited members of SSIS, PARC, Health Center, BCC, and other health organizations on campus to attend meetings and discuss particular initiatives.
Participated in and support the Brandeis Pro-Choice Plan B vending machine and serve as a resource for them.
RULES COMMITTEE
I serve on bylaw/rules committee, and have provided perspective on amendments as well as have gained in-depth knowledge on both the current Bylaws and Constitution, having read both repeatedly (what is my life?), but this allows me to have a more acute knowledge of the specifics of how the union works in every regard as well as changes that have been made towards it over the years.
Discovered a bylaw which was accidentally includes without having ever being passed that allowed Community Senators, requested that it be brought up at the upcoming Senate meeting, and had it voted upon and written into the Bylaws officially to allow better engagement of students who wish to be involved.
DINING COMMITTEE
Communicates comments, complaints, and compliments from the student body to Sodexo administrators and management to help serve as a liason between the student body and Sodexo.
Will be cooking alongside Sodexo workers within Sherman in two weeks or so to discuss expanding into new recipes, and will get to both prep and make my grandmother's very delicious chicken curry recipe to serve to students as part of the dinner service.
Distributed gourmet cupcakes to workers across Sodexo, and campus as a whole, as part of Worker Appreciation Day
Discussed Sodexo worker behavior and appropriateness
Discussed expanding available items within the C-store on campus, and lowering prices for items currently there.
Discussed nutrition, as well access to gluten free, vegetarian, and vegan meals to help accessibility and variety.
GIRLUP PRESIDENT
Held a Cupcake Gala, containing 53 professors across every department on campus, to have an open conversation about struggles women face in higher up academia and careers in terms of gendered roles, sexual harassment, work-life balance, as well as an open panel containing the Dean of Arts and Sciences as well as multiple heads of departments and influential professors at Brandeis.
Held a discussion forum with BADASS to discuss "To what extent has Brandeis failed women and genderqueer people?" Cosponsors included: FMLA, Brandeis Pro-Choice, KBG, ADPhi, AEPi, APP, Chinese Cultural Connection, SASE, and SACNAS.
Holding a self-defense workshop taught by Brandeis's Krav Maga club.

Held a Food for Thought event to discuss and have an open conversation about improving access to education in Ethopia, and cosponsored with BBSO, BASO, and CCC.
Held a food for thought event to discuss the societal stigma around reproductive health care within India and cosponsored with Brandeis Pro-Choice and SAASA.
